Christmas Bathroom Decorating Ideas

Christmas will be exciting this year in our home thanks to our very excited 4 yr-old grand daughter.  She has had a hand in all the decorating this year and she has not spared even our guest bathroom.

Here are some handy tips to guide you in decorating your bathroom for the holidays.

1.      Holiday Pictures:

  • While the bathroom area may have limited wall space, you can simply change out your existing pictures with holiday ones. In our home we have hundreds of great Holiday shots from over the years. We simply place them in frames and hang them up.
  • If you have a certain theme or a color scheme then purchase some pictures that reflect the theme you want to use. Check charity shops as they usually receive lots of donations every holiday season. If you lack wall space, then hang a colourful Christmas shower curtain.

2.      Floor Rugs:

  • I have tiled floors in my bathroom and stepping on a nice plush rug is wonderful on a cold day. Your guests will also thank-you.
  • There are great deals on Holiday themed rugs this time of year.

Our bathrooms contains a plush snowman bathroom rug however, if you want a more sophisticated holiday theme then choose a nice plush rug in a color that matches your existing color theme.

 3.      Lighting

  • Light up your bathroom for Christmas with some beautiful candles. If you use candles select ones with a Christmas scent, such pine. Cinnamon or evergreen .There is endless possibilities even battery operated ones.
  • Christmas is the perfect time to add some extra sparkle in your bathroom with hanging wall candles or wall sconces, Christmas night lights or there are plug in style lighted plants such as poinsettias.  .

4.      Christmas Accessories

  • Tuck away your everyday items such as tooth brushes, soap dispensers ect;  and add some holiday cheer with Christmas hand towels and washcloths to really brighten up your bathroom.
  • There are many holiday soaps and even decorated holiday tissue boxes, hand sanitizer available to buy during the holidays.
  • For that Christmas smell place a beautiful bowl filled with Christmas potpourri and set it on your bathroom counter top.

DIY BATHTUB REFINISHING KITS -PROS AND CONS

DO –IT-YOURSELF BATHTUB REFINISHING KITS

I have heard many horror stories and received many frantic telephone calls from DI-Your-selfers  who purchased a DIY Bathroom  Refinishing kit at their local hard ware store and decided they were up to the doing the job themselves to save some money. All of these jobs went poorly and the Bathtubs were left in a terrible peeling or yellowing state. The end result being that they not only needed a professional to rescue them but the job ended up costing more because now the Bathtub had to be stripped of the coating they put on before .

THE PRO’S OF REFINISHING KITS:

To be honest, there are not many points in favour of DIY Bathtub Refinishing, minus the cheap price tag and the fact that you can complete the job yourself in around your own schedule. , if you’re wanting to do the job correctly (and I’m sure you do), it requires a high skill level that the average weekend handyman just doesn’t have.

THE CON’S OF REFINISHING KITS:

  • In order to prepare the surface correctly, it needs be totally clean of all dirt, soap scum, caulking, calcium deposits, and any products that may have built up on the Bath Tubs surfaces from years of using hair and bathing products. The reason I mention this as a con is because it takes hours of scrubbing, using harsh cleaning chemicals, tools and scrubbers, using a straight edge razor, and a lot of patience to truly clean the surface properly.
  • If you purchase a home with a Bathtub that has had a DYI refinishing job you will need to work with a very harsh paint stripper to strip all the finish off in order to clean the Bathtub of all the old paint.
  • The use of harsh chemicals (such as Hydroflouric Acid compounds), fast-drying fibreglass body filler, various solvents and industrial-strength cleaning agents, and application of the Polyurethane topcoats and primers, provide a formidable opponent when the do-it-your -selfer is new to the game.
  • If you were to tackle Bathtub Refinishing yourself, you would need to wear an appropriate breathing apparatus (full face respirator) – one that would allow you to breathe comfortably, as well as be able to move around easily. You should also wear goggles, and rubber gloves.
  • You should be able to mix (and spray) urethane primer according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • You should be able to correctly mix (and spray) the Polyurethane topcoats to supplier specs.

My advice is to hire professional Bath tub technicians such as those employed with Beautiful Baths who use a non-toxic product ,are highly skilled refinishers with many years of experience to get the job done correctly and they offer a factory standard 5 year warranty although, your Refinished Bath Tub should last you at least 10 years.

Choosing the Best Beautiful Bathroom Design for a Small Bathroom Space

According to home improvement-and financing.com experts, most older small bathroom design installations have the obligatory toilet, a small sink and small sized bath tub, however the inconvenient design and installed location of each fixture and fitting usually means that there is no space left over for anything else, not least a shower or larger more family sized sink .

Older bathroom designs often don’t allow for a luxurious bath under the window so that you can gaze out at the stars and you relax and soak in the tub, some are placed well but are the wrong way round with the taps to the exterior view intsead of your head.

A very inconvenient installation is placing the basin directly under the window… no chance of a non-steam mirror there and if you have a small mirror propped up on the window sill – you have the daylight coming in behind it, greatly reducing visibility in the mirror AND cutting out light coming into the room!

The ugliest items on view in older bathrooms are the water boiler and the toilet cistern and getting these out of sight is often a priority in small bathroom design remodeling projects.

Beautiful Baths expert installers can take the stress of Bathroom remodeling  off your minds by working with you to redesign your bathroom taking in consideration functionality,  looks and costs.

Making a small bathroom design into a multi-functional family bathroom means including as many fixtures and fittings as your family requires, while still leaving as much visible floor space as possible – to help give the illusion of space and prevent additional installations from creating a cramped space.

Action Plan and Tips

  • 1. Draw a plan of your bathroom as it is now – (try using graph paper with 1/2″ by 1/2″ grids using these as 6″ by 6″ squares)
  • 2. Draw a plan of the same space with the fittings where you would ideally want them
  • 3. Get a number of estimates for moving any supply and waste systems to see if this new small bathroom design plan suits your budget.
  • Visit as many bathroom show rooms and home improvement shows as possible and talk to the experts there to give you more ideas and also look out for new products and special offers.
  • 4. Re-draw your plan if necessary with the new ideas that match both your dreams and your budget.
  • 5. Locate the right certified, qualified professionals and as well as get references, and written estimates from as many as you can – go and have a look at work that they have recently done, don’t start until you are sure that you have the right contractors who have the experience to see the job through to a quality finish.

The easiest part of a small bathroom design project is the planning, but it is important to take your time and make all the changes before you start the actual work. Give yourself time to discover all of the options available to you that will help make your dream small bathroom design.

Choosing The Right Toilet

The world of Bathroom toilet design has become huge. Toilets are no longer boring looking or being hidden in a corner. They’ve become another Bathroom Design feature. Selecting the correct toilet can be overwhelming so I decided to condense what I have learned in some easy steps to help others select the best toilet to meet their needs in way of functionality and Aesthetics.

1)    Color: White never goes out of style so it’s always a safe choice, keep in mind re-sale. Your color choice may not be to someone else’s  liking.

Also, other colors or graphics can be more expensive.

2)    Style: Do you want to convey a look that’s contemporary, traditional, casual or formal?  All these styles do not affect functionality.

3)   Toilet bowl shape:  Regarding the toilet bowls shape, you can choose an elongated shape or a round one. The round front tends to be two inches shorter, and works well for smaller spaces. The larger elongated front is more comfortable and sanitary, since there is less drip on the toilet.

4)   Size:  Toilets come in many different lengths, widths and heights .Be certain to measure the space available for the toilet to ensure a comfortable fit. Also, you must consider the rough-in space, which is how far the center of the toilet bowl is from the finished wall, since this limits the size of the toilet you can install.

 5)  Toilet trap way’s size: The trap way is the part of the toilet that water and waste exit. The minimum standard size is designed to accommodate waste of up to a 1 ½ inch diameter. The larger the trap way, the less likely clogging will be.

6).   The flushing system: Gravity or pressure:

  • Gravity-fed toilets work the old-fashioned (and most reliable) way. Upon flushing, water goes from the tank into the bowl (by means of reliable gravity). When enough water builds up, the weight forces everything through the S-shaped trap way, at which point a siphoning action takes over and finishes the job.
  • Pressure-assist tanks are completely sealed and rest inside the toilet housing. When the tanks fill with water, the trapped air gets compressed. The pressure-assist results in a more efficient flush. A more efficient flush means that the water surface in the bowl can be larger. And a larger water surface means less frequent cleaning. The potential drawbacks are that pressure-assisted tanks are louder and sometimes tougher to repair than conventional gravity models.

7). Toilet Types: 1 or 2 piece toilets or Wall Mounted:

  • Typically, you will find the more inexpensive toilet to be the two piece toilet, with the bowl and tank being two separate connected pieces.
  • A one piece toilet connects five to six parts into one seamless looking piece. These have a bit more style to them (with a correspondingly more expensive price tag), and need less space and are easier to clean.

The wall mounted toilet Mounts to wall and eliminates need for toilet foot or base. The wall mount toilet cost more to purchase and install, is great for transfers from wheelchair or walker, requires thicker wall for mounting, drain for toilet must be on wall rather than floor and are easy to clean underneath

8) Toilet Seats: That’s correct, not all toilets come with a toilet seat!

Toilet seats do not  come in sizes, but they do come in two different shapes: round toilet seats and elongated toilet seats, each of which correspond to two different toilet bowl shapes. Round toilet seats are still the standard in most homes, and they’re the toilet seats you typically see most often. Elongated toilet seats are becoming more popular, and they have a long oval shape. Before you begin shopping for toilet seats, find out if you have a round or elongated toilet bowl so you can shop accordingly.

  • Pick a mount type. Decide whether you want a conventional bolt-and-nut mount or an integral bolt and nut. While they look better in the beginning, integral bolt-and-nut mounts can be very frustrating when they need to be removed, as the nut must be drilled out to remove the seat. Conventional bolt-and-nut mounts are easier to use and still the standard for most toilet seats.
  • Choose a material. Decide whether you want plastic, wood or a cushioned seat. Most toilet seats are made of high-impact plastic or a plastic coating over composite wood. Plastic seats are available in white, black and several pastel colors. Plastic toilet seats can be very cold in winter and also in summer when central air is running, and they are more likely to split and tend to show marks from cleaning. Natural wood is warmer, but it can be stained or damaged by many toilet bowl cleaners. Cushioned seats are nice and soft but tend to crack and split over time. If warmth is a big concern, consider buying a heated toilet seat.
  • Think about padding. Soft toilet seats are more comfortable for people recovering from surgery or childbirth, but they can make transfers to and from wheelchairs or shower benches more difficult. Firmer seats are better for transfers. Some people prefer soft toilet seats over the standard hard ones simply because they find padded toilet seats to be more comfortable and warmer than regular toilet seats.
  • Choose a style. Toilet seats are made in a wide array of styles, so whether your bathroom is sleek and modern or comfy and traditional, you can find the perfect seat for your toilet.

9). Maintenance features: Some toilets have features designed to make it easier to take care of them. For instance, Toto, an innovative Japanese manufacturer, has Sana Gloss, a ceramic glaze which prevents bacteria and mould build-up, making the toilet easy to clean. American Standard has its Easy Clean feature. The designers at Kohler have come up with an insulated liner that prevents moisture from condensation on the toilet tanks outside.

10). Unique Luxury toilet features: High end toilets may come with heated     seats, warm air drying systems and built-in bidets, such as the Toto Washlets. Kohler Comfort Height toilets have a higher seat, making sitting down and standing easier.

cleaning shower doors

Cleaning your shower doors can be a tedious and challenging chore especially if you have a busy house hold using the shower, allergies, environmental concerns, hard water, or sandy soil. There are many products on the market with varying degrees of success. Here is a list of suggested products that have worked in some situations.

  • To keep your shower door streak free, wipe it down after each shower. A squeegee can be used for quick and easy removal of water and remember, always wear gloves to protect your hands when working with cleaning chemicals.
  • Try CLR.  The trick is to keep the chemical on the glass so you do not damage your tile or acrylic. Apply the CLR directly on your paper towel and place the saturated paper towel directly onto the glass. It will stick to the glass. After about 10 to 15 minutes, carefully pull the towel off and use a scruffy to loosen the scale. Keep reapplying until the glass is clear.
  • Pour one cup of white vinegar and one cup of water into a spray bottle. Shake the bottle to mix the contents. Spray the vinegar solution onto the shower door and wipe the door with a soft rag. The vinegar solution will remove dirt and grime from the door.
  • Pour one cup of rubbing alcohol and one cup of water into a spray bottle and shake the bottle to mix the contents. Spray the rubbing alcohol solution onto the shower door and wipe it off with newspaper for a streak free shine.

Kaye Morris ,  Rhonda Bunton and Christine Argier writers for eHow suggest the following.

  • Kaye suggests that you wipe the shower door with a fabric softener sheet to     remove soft scum. The fabric softener will loosen the soap scum and lift it from the door.
  • Rhonda suggests that household baking soda can do the trick. It will take a bit of scrubbing, but  it is inexpensive and eco-friendly. Put on cleaning gloves, and take a steel wool cleaning pad or cleaning sponge that is soaked in hot water. Liberally sprinkle baking soda on the sponge, and scrub the shower door with it. Keep your cleaning sponge damp and sprinkled with baking soda for this remedy to be effective.
  • Cleaning erasers are finely textured special sponges that have cleaning solution embedded in them. There are several brands of cleaning erasers available, including the brand Mr. Clean, and some brands even have specially formulated cleaning erasers meant just for use in the bathroom. To get the soap scum off of your glass shower door with a cleaning eraser, soak the eraser with warm water and wring out the excess. Scrub the shower door with the cleaning eraser, rinsing it out with more warm water occasionally.
  • Liquid laundry stain removers can do double duty as a cleaner for glass shower doors. Simply pour some on a cleaning sponge or steel wool cleaning pad and rub it on the shower door–the soap scum should come right off the glass. Then rinse it off with hot water
  • Christine suggests that using WD-40 to clean shower doors helps prevent the build up of soap scum and water spots, making future cleaning easier. Spray WD-40 generously on the inside and outside of the shower doors, concentrating on areas with significant build up. You don’t need to dry the doors before application; WD-40 can be sprayed on wet or dry shower doors. Wipe away using a clean towel to remove dirt, soap scum, calcium deposits and other residue. Apply additional WD-40 to any troublesome spots and wipe away. WD-40 is safe to use for cleaning tiles and shower fixtures. Simply spray, and then wipe away with a clean towel. As a safety precaution, avoid spraying WD-40 on the shower floor base to prevent slipping.

Revitalizing an outdated bathroom on a limited budget

A bathroom is one of the places in your home that you can update and be guaranteed a good return on the money you spent. A bathroom remodel is the second most desired upgrades that home buyers look for. You will increase your home’s equity by following some simple steps to renovate a bathroom inexpensively.

Draw out a plan or dream for your bathroom that will best suit your needs.

1. You can save money by completing most of the work yourself. The largest amount of money people spend goes towards labour more than materials. If you can do the work yourself, you would be amazed at how much money you would save. If you are not a handy person, know when to hire. Knowing how to avoid the pipes and electrical wiring when demolishing your bathroom is important to avoid accidents and damages that could add to the cost later. Also, if you do not know how to measure accurately for things to fit properly , do not want all the leg work of shopping around for needed supplies, do not know how to do the plumbing and electrical, hire an expert. You may pay but you will be sure that the work will be done correctly. You will save more in the long run if you have been diligent in checking out references and the Better Business Bureau. Get everything in writing. Make sure they do not subcontract so you know who you are actually dealing with.

3. If you are doing the job yourself you can buy materials directly and shop around for best prices. Remember if you will be tiling, you must purchase a little bit of extra tiles for future repairs, especially if you are buying styles that could be discontinued someday. Discontinued tiles are priced lower since they will no longer be available; just make sure to buy an extra box or two for future needs.

4. Paint your bathroom walls a neutral color, add some accessories such as white fluffy towels, change out cabinetry knobs, towel racks ect; Re-use existing cabinets, toilets, bathtubs and shower doors if they are still in good condition. You can refurbish or refinish them to make them look good again. Do not buy a new mirror if your existing one still works, you can frame it to make it look attractive.

5. Go to yard sales, check out road side Spring clean up events, check online deals through e-bay or Kijiji websites to locate pieces that you can use for your bathroom renovation. For example, claw foot tubs are inexpensive when you buy them at yard sales as opposed to going to antique dealers or to a store that has already restored them. You can also use an old dresser or chest of drawers that you can turn into a sink by drilling holes for your fixtures and plumbing. They would look better than those manufactured cabinets you see at home improvement stores.

What are Client's are Saying...

Thank you! I am thrilled with the new bathroom!
